Egyptian authorities have restored the country’s Internet connection after about 5 days of being shutdown starting January 28, 2011. Mobile phone service was also shutdown shortly after the Internet service providers pulled the plug. Protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his government has been going on for several days and the disconnection was viewed as a way to disrupt communications among protest organizers. The protesters stood their ground, but thousands of Mubarak supporters clashed with them in Cairo. Hundreds of people have been killed in the violence while thousands more are injured. Connectivity was restored on February 2 at 11:34AM local time in Egypt. The Internet has now become a very powerful tool to communicate with a vast amount of people and has become the media of choice to instantly send and receive messages through various social networks like Twitter and Facebook. The ability of the Egyptian government to shut it down in a time of civil unrest is a wake up call to all democratic nations. The Internet should be protected as a media for freedom of expression, much like TV, radio and print media. Not to mention that for most of the foreigners caught between Egypt’s civil unrest, the internet and their mobile phones may be the only way they could communicate with their family back home. Let us hope that the Philiippine government will not allow the Internet to be shutdown in our country, no matter how bad the situation may become. All freedom loving people should protect it. The Bohol ICT Council sponsored a multi-sectoral meeting yesterday, January 14, 2011 at the Panda Tea Garden Suites. Discussions on the potential of Bohol as a future IT and BPO business center took place and a representative from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in the person of Mr. Emmanuel D. Cortero spoke at the meeting and highlighted the advantages and importance of a PEZA Accreditation, and how one can process it with the help of their agency. The meeting was well attended by representatives of both the private and public sectors of Bohol. During the discussions, although quite behind what Cebu has already achieved, it was clear that Bohol had all the makings of being the next big thing not only in tourism but also in the IT/ BPO industry. Someone just needs to start ahead and begin investing in our province and the rest will follow. As clearly spoken during the meeting, Governor Edgar Chatto is in full support with the efforts of the ICT council, and that the council itself is doing its best to get things moving a lot faster than before. Bohol needs synergy and a lot of cooperation not only in the private sector, but more importantly from the local government units. The LGU’s must gear up, be more efficient and be open minded so that they can contribute to the direction that Bohol is clearly heading to right now. Share...

Atty. Alvin John Uy, Secretary of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), arrived in Bohol yesterday and is scheduled to meet today with Gov. Edgar Chatto and the Bohol ICT Council. They will discuss the strategies for the province to help attract business process outsourcing (BPO) firms in Bohol. The agencies involved in helping promote Bohol as a location for BPO firms include the Bohol Investment Promotions Center, Bohol ICT Council, Department of Trade and Industry – Bohol and the private sector represented by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Gov. Chatto said in a breakfast meeting with the Bohol ICT Council on January 4, 2011 at the governor’s mansion that Bohol should fast track the steps to be taken to ensure that the province can benefit from the growing BPO industry. News reports last December showed that the Philippines is now the number one call center location worldwide. The country has overtaken India for the first time. The Bohol ICT Council is currently conducting a survey on its website at www.bictc.org to help estimate the Boholano workforce working in BPO firms outside Bohol. Share...

Google seems to be getting its hands on everything it can. Google will be launching its own Chrome notebook sometime next year. The Chrome laptop will be released first to a select number of businesses and “beta” testers to play with before it’s made available to the public in mid-2011. Companies like Virgin America, Logitech, and even the Department of Defense will be using the beta version of the Chrome netbook (dubbed CR-48), which will likely come with a 12.1-inch display, a full-sized keyboard, 3G access, and a webcam for video chatting, but the good news is, you may also have a chance to test drive the beta version of the Chrome notebook. More details about the Chrome notebook include: ● No hard drives (flash storage). ● No caps lock keys. ● No control keys. ● Jailbreak-friendly. ● Verizon is offering 100MB of free data per month for the first two years you own a Chrome notebook, contract-free. While the beta testing model of the Chrome, the notebook (CR-48) will be brand- less, black, nondescript, and not for sale, Google will be working to design a purchase-ready notebook after the beta testing period has ended. There’s been no pricing or solid availability date mentioned yet. (Source: http://www.geeksugar.com/Google-Chrome-Notebook-12455807) Share...

After several months of Beta status, the PRC Passers (www.prcpassers.com) website developed by Auza.Net is now fully released. During the beta period, various bug fixes and improvements were done, including the ability to greet or congratulate a passer. The site is unique among others doing listings of board exam passers because it has a customized search engine developed by Auza.Net which allows very quick searches of the names of the PRC board exam passers. The search results also allows the user to link to the actual official PRC website page where the passer’s name was listed. Also, search engine optimization or SEO was done allowing the website to land in top 5 positions for search keywords such as ‘prc passers’ and ‘prc exam passers’ on Google. It is within top 10 for ‘prc board exam’, ‘prc board passers’ and ‘prc board exam passers’. PRCPassers.com is a case study by Auza.Net for its SEO services. At the start, the website would only appear on page 5 or further in the search results due to other similar websites which have been in existence much earlier. By following recommended SEO practices and by generating relevant and useful content on the website, the Auza.Net SEO team managed to gain the top search positions in very relevant keywords. Due to the top position in search results, website traffic to www.prcpassers.com has increased from less than 50 page views per day to more than 500 per day. Google Inc. has decided to begin blocking Facebook and other Web services from accessing its user’s information, highlighting an ever growing rivalry between the two internet giants. Google made a subtle change to the guidelines that govern how external services can let their users import contacts from Google. Now those services will have to allow their users to export data in a manner similar to how Google handles data export, meaning Facebook will have to change its policy if it wants to allow more users to morph Gmail contacts with Facebook friends. However, as Mathew Ingram notes at GigaOm, now that Facebook has 500 million users the policy change is a bit late to really force Facebook into having to make any meaningful changes. All it means is that Facebook users won’t be able to automatically use their Gmail contacts to populate their Facebook friends list, but they’ll still be able to use contacts from Yahoo or Microsoft’s services, as well as just find contacts by searching on Facebook. Are you a researcher who likes to find vulnerabilities on web applications? You have a chance to earn money if you can “discover legitimate, critical flaws in its Web applications — including Google.com, Blogger.com, Orkut.com, and YouTube.com”. In a bold move, Google is offering money for bugs that users can find on its various services. The rules are simple: “No automated testing tools are allowed, nor are attacks against Google’s corporate infrastructure, social engineering and physical attacks, denial-of-service bugs, non- Web application vulnerabilities, SEO blackhat techniques, vulnerabilities in Google-branded websites hosted by third parties, and flaws in any newly acquired technologies by Google”. And researches can only use their own accounts and must not acquire access to data from another account. Bug reports can earn the research $500 to $3,133.70, depending on the severity and cleverness of the bug reported. The researcher of the bug report that got accepted for the monetary award will also be recognized in Google’s security page. A similar program launched for the Chromium project last January yielded important bug reports and Google hopes to duplicate the success with its web applications. The Chromium project is an open source browser that “aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web.”, according the Chromium website.
