AMID looming power crisis and the possible power rationing in the Visayas Grid, local officials here are now jump-starting the Cantakoy Falls hydro-power development at the Wahig-Pamacsalan River into Bohol’s newest clean-energy source. Speaking to the local media at the weekly Mansion news engagement, Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado divulged the possibility of the effect of the planned power rationing in the Visayas grid as an effect of the reduced power outputs due to critical water levels to run the country’s hydro-electric plants. This as possible shutdown for 40 days of the country’s major hydro power plans loom, reports said. He hinted that since the Visayas Grid shares a common power source, there is a possibility of making sure that important power requirements of major industrial and commercial centers would be prioritized. That scenario leaves some areas with decreased power, which may result to rotating brown-outs or power rationing. The governor, who revealed his intention to meet Bohol power providers and the officials of the National Grid Corporation (formerly National Power Corporation), said he wants to be assessed of the local situation by the players themselves. He also insists he has made it a policy to come up with consultations to come up with any decision. The governor also revealed he has met Dennis Villareal and Sta. Clara Development Corporation, who has initially shown interest in developing hydro power in Cantakoy Falls. At present, Bohol power requirement is largely coming from the upgraded 138 KV Leyte Bohol Power Interconnection Project. That is also complemented by three Bohol based hydro-electric power plants, each...

Auza.Net has released another free online service called PRCPassers.com (http:// www.prcpassers.com), a fast search engine for names of board examinees who passed the PRC exams. It is still in its beta stage which means there are still improvements being done but the site is already usable by the general public. The service is unique compared to all other websites that publish lists of board exam passers because it is a real search engine where you simply type in the last, first or middle name or any combination of these and the results are shown immediately. The user is no longer required to click several links before finding the list of names which can take quite some time. PRCPassers.com keeps an index of the board exam passers allowing for a very fast search, while providing the user a link to the official results on the PRC website so the results can be verified. In contrast, the other websites that publish the board exam results simply copy the data and republish them. The search engine is a customized WordPress plugin that includes a very fast search algorithm developed specifically for this type of index. It also performs the indexing everytime a new list of board exam passers are published by the PRC. Even though the plugin performs complicated functions, the development period was relatively short, a total of 5 working days only. This is because the developer only had to develop the functions that are specific to the search engine. All other functions like authentication and database abstraction are already handled by WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org), a very popular content management system. Share...

Once upon a time, there was Valentines Day, a day filled with mushy letters and red hearts and flowers; then came computers, Facebook, Skype and Twitter. The “older” generation would often say that communicating thoughts and feelings aren’t given as much value as they did before, and one of their reasons is because almost everything nowadays are done automatically and with very little effort. Love letters have turned into emails or text messages, and valentine gifts have morphed into gadgets and gizmos. Yes, Valentine traditions have already been altered. But on the idea that communicating feelings are given much value, we, the techies, beg to differ. In fact, during these times, the emphasis on communication has grown even stronger. Technology has made us capable of checking on our loved ones abroad, and even to kids who are just in school or at the mall. It has made us capable of communicating feelings that we find difficult to personally say. Thanks to computers, smart phones and the internet, we are able to talk to our loved ones even if they are a thousand miles away from us. Take Skype for example, providing us with free video talking, what more could we ask for? Then we have the ever popular Facebook, I bet everyone who has used it would at one time or another say,”Hey, I found my highschool bestfriend again!” And for Valentines, what could be more romantic for a couple being separated by a vast ocean than an online date? As long as we stick to safety and proper use of technology, there is nothing daunting about it. So...
