An innovative noting application that helps users share fun memories and experiences won the first place in the first ever Bohol Startup Weekend held in the University of Bohol in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The Flipnotes app, which bested eight other apps last weekend, allows users to create notes that have pictures in front with the text behind it and which can be flipped using a flip function. The Bohol Startup Weekend last May 23 to 25 is a local leg of the Startup Weekend, a global movement of active technopreneurs learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. “It’s basically a 54-hour gathering of tech developers, designers, marketers, and startup enthusiasts for the purpose of sharing innovative ideas, crafting new products, and launching startups,” said event organizer Benjamin Skelton. The Bohol Startup Weekend was organized by TechTalks.ph, Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communication Technology Office, Bohol Information and Communication Technology Council, and the Bohol Provincial Government. Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, and building a minimal viable product before demonstrating their prototypes on Sunday night. Senator Grace Poe, the top senator in the 2013 elections, delivered the keynote speech during the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Bohol Chronicle held at the Bohol Tropics Resort on May 16, 2014. The senator thanked the Boholanos for the support during the last elections and reported that the FOI Bill or Freedom of Information Bill, has been passed at the senate. She also congratulated the management and staff of the newspaper for its success in the last six decades where even during the martial law in the 1970’s, the newspaper continued to be published regularly. The launching was part of its 60th anniversary celebration held at the Bohol Tropics Resort, Tagbilaran City. The pioneering newspaper’s longevity was acknowledged as its greatest achievement by the various speakers at the event. The digital archive is another pioneering project in Bohol by Auza.Net and Bohol Chronicle Radio Corporation and was was dubbed during the launch as “Bohol’s ultimate throwback”. The technical team organized by Auza.Net is composed of photographer/videographer Chester Impang, illustrator and graphics editor QB Impang, software developer Jay Paul Aying and the Auza.Net Summer 2014 OJTs or on-the-job trainees. by Jerome Auza It has been quite a while that I have reported anything about my solar energy experiments. This week, with lots of summer sunshine, I was able to power up the perimeter lighting and right of way lighting of Auza.Net without having to switch to the grid. I finally got a new 300 watts, 48 volts solar panel and have set it up to add energy production on my initial setup. The challenge was that my setup is currently only 24 volts. After some reading and experimentation, I determined that the 48V panel is okay to use in a 24 volt system. This is because the solar panel need to be of higher voltage compared to the batteries and the panel voltage would just follow the battery voltage. So my setup now is composed of a 128W, 24V panel and a 300W, 48V panel configured to function in a 24V system. By doing this, I am actually only using about half of what the 300W panel is capable. This is because the current produced by a solar panel does not change much if the battery voltage is changed. Based on the current and voltage measurements, I am currently able to produce 240W from my two solar panels. When my second 48V panel will arrive, I will also need to get a 48V inverter and setup the system to 48V to maximize the power production. I will then have to remove my 24V panel at that time and setup the charge controller to 48V. In addition to the new 300W panel, I also had to change the angle...
