Facebook is probably the largest social network in the Internet today and a few hundred million users around the world regularly post updates about themselves and share information, some of it private, to friends and family. While it is fun and helpful to enhance relationships wherever your Facebook friends may be around the world, users should be aware that they are also exposing themselves to potential danger from identity thieves and malicious individuals. Certain information that can become publicly available on Facebook including your birthday, address, and names of your family members and friends. Facebook has become a venue for criminals to exploit naive users. Users should remove birthdays, addresses, telephone numbers and the maiden names of their mothers as these are information that are used by banks and other financial institutions to verify your identity. Even if you have very strict privacy settings and have limited access to this information to trusted friends, it is possible that one of their accounts can be compromised and your information can become exposed. It is safer not to put such information because it is very easy to compromise a Facebook account, especially if users access their accounts on public computers. You should also be careful when accessing any website at an Internet cafe because some malicious operators intentionally put programs called key loggers which record all characters you typed on the keyboard, thus revealing your account access details. Also, computer viruses may contain code to gather accounts and passwords from Facebook and other popular websites. You should not trust immediately anyone who attempts to befriend you on Facebook because a compromised...

Microsoft has officially revealed some of the key features of its forthcoming operating system. The new OS which may or may not be called Windows 8, has a completely different user interface. It takes inspiration mostly from the Windows Phone UI which puts a heavy emphasis on touch-based functionality. One of the most obvious design overhauls is on the Windows start menu. It has now been replaced with a colorful tiled design similar to the Exposé Screen of Firefox and other quick- screen-navigation system in most browsers. The colorful tiles however, do not display websites that have been visited, it instead displays static program icons and widgets that are called “live tiles” because they provide constant updates and notifications. Looking for files in the Windows 8 OS has also been made easier by allowing users to view their files in the same way as the programs are being viewed. It is easily navigated with touch alone since its development was primarily geared for tablets, but, it can be also used with a standard mouse and keyboard. The OS also maintained its ability to multi-task. Multiple applications can be viewed at the same time on the same screen by dragging and dropping the app window onto the main screen. It has also been optimized to work with the upcoming Internet Explorer 10. Overall, Windows 8 looks like a good development for Microsoft, it is however, still far from complete and a public release date is yet to be announced. Share...

Before anything else, one must know the difference between the terms “battery life” and “battery lifespan”. The former is the time wherein your battery will run until it needs to be recharged. The latter, refers to the span of time your batteries will last before it must be replaced. Now, with that cleared, lets get to the business of taking care of your phone’s batteries. If you get puzzled as to why you charge your phone everyday when others just charge it every 3 days, you may be running a lot of applications on your phone without getting anything essential in return. Check out these tips on how to save battery life: 1. Minimize use of applications that are not needed at the moment such as location services. Even when not in use, this app will continue to drain your batteries. 2. Turn off WiFi. This is highly recommended especially in places where there is really no WiFi signal in the first place, or when you are not likely to use it. 3. Turn off Blue-tooth. This is not just a battery life-saver tip, it also helps keep your phone secure by not being visible to other users. 4. Turn off push mails and notifications; avoid auto-checking lots of email accounts. This helps minimize the activities of your phone. If not turned off or at least minimized, your phone could be spending more battery life than it needs to even when you’re asleep and not using it at all. 5. Adjust brightness. Your phone does not need to be at its brightest especially when the place you’re staying in...

Are you a victim of viruses spreading on facebook? And have you been embarassed by being called a spammer because of suddenly posting stuff on your friends’ facebook walls? Well, here’s what has been happening. Five years ago, hackers found it so simple to slip their code into computers, but this has been solved since the evolution of Internet security making browsers more protected. However, hackers have found a new way of spreading malicious contents not by entering internet browsers, but by directly hacking internet users instead. This is called Social engineering, which has become a serious problem these days. This is merely the act of psychologically influencing people into performing measures or exposing private information, rather than using technical cracking methods. According to wikipedia encyclopedia, the term typically applies to trickery or deception for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or computer system access. According to a Yahoo News Report, “Social engineering is how the Koobface virus spreads on Facebook. Users get a message from a friend telling them to go and view a video. When they click on the link, they’re then told that they need to download some sort of video playing software in order to watch. That software is actually a malicious program. Social engineering hackers also try to infect victims by hacking into Web pages and popping up fake antivirus warnings designed to look like messages from the operating system.” A social-engineering method called spearphishing is a recognized problem. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, criminals need some inside information on their targets to convince them the e-mails are legitimate. Then, they send...
