Tech Talk: Finally, an Economical Original Ink Printer System, the Epson L200

Printing colored documents used to be very expensive if the user wants to use original ink in order to ensure the highest print quality and durability.  The cost of ink cartridges is simply too high for the average user.  Many users have resorted to 3rd party ink refills or continuous ink systems in an attempt to reduce cost.   Fortunately, Epson released a printer family with its own ink tanks and original ink bottles that changed the economics of ink based printing.  Users who want to print high quality documents and photos will now enjoy the quality assurance that comes with Epson’s original ink tank system while keeping the costs down to less than Php1.00 per page for black and white prints.   The L200 is a 3-in-1 printer and includes a high resolution 600×1200 dpi scanner and photocopier function in either black and white or color.  The package includes 3 black ink bottles and 1 each for magenta, cyan and yellow.  Out of the box, the included ink bottles is enough for 12,000 black and white prints.   The L200 is the world’s first genuine ink tank system and it comes with a 1 year or 15,000 prints warranty from Epson.  Because the printer is specifically designed for an ink tank system, it eliminated problems associated with printers retrofitted with 3rd party ink tank system like clogging, messy ink leaks and awkward ink tank attachments.   We’ve been using the L200 for almost a month now and we’ve printed or photocopied hundreds of pages of documents.  Our experience so far has been very satisfactory.  The print quality is...

TechTalk: Alcatel One Touch Nation arrives in Bohol

Flashback: The brand Alcatel was one of the manufacturers who first introduced to us the mobile phone.  A few years back, they sold the famous soap-shaped mobile phone, that had a small screen with orange backlighting.  Back then, they weren’t the coolest designs you could find, but their phones were as sturdy as the phones from the brands that lead the market during that time. That “safeguard” shaped phone was this writer’s first mobile phone.  It was handed down, and I was happy and content because it did what it had to do, and that was to text and call my friends and family. Then, as more phones and brands eventually entered the country, the manufacturer Alcatel suddenly went silent. Surprise comeback: I call it a surprise comeback because, well, I think they just came out of nowhere and attacked the Philippine mobile industry again.  The last time I saw an Alcatel phone was, I think during 2010.  It was one of my friend’s phones and I was surprised at how chic and sleek their designs were becoming. Then, enter this year, particularly yesterday, at the BQ Mall Atrium, where the Alcatel One Touch Nation proudly presented their five new mobile phones.   Save N’ Earn has gathered the market’s mobile phone manufacturers and put them together for an Expo in time with the TBTK celebrations. The Phones: The onetouch 810D Glam:  The phone especially made for the ladies.  Specs: Dual Sim; Expandable Memory up to 16GB; MP3 Player and FM Radio The onetouch 918N Glory:  Alcatel describes it just as it is, Easy, practical and fun. Specs:  Android 2.3...

TechTalk: Still Afraid of Linux? Fear the Anti-Piracy Team Instead

When Auza.Net started operations in Bohol in 2005, the company immediately started promoting the use of open source software as alternative to using pirated commercial software. At that time, it was a bit hard to convince Boholano users to move to Linux and OpenOffice.Org because the user interface of most Linux distributions were not that advanced yet. This year, the Philippine Anti-Piracy Team has been cracking down small time and big time software pirates as reported on their website at www.papt.org.ph. They are catching violators from computer technicians installing pirated software to large corporations using pirated software in their main business operations. Penalties and imprisonment have been slapped to convicted violators. If your business is found using pirated software, all computers may be confiscated and used as evidence. That means your business could shutdown. It’s no surprise that piracy is prevalent with software licenses increasing the cost of a computer significantly. Take for example, a popular operating system called Windows 7 will cost about Php 4,000 to Php6,000 per computer. The popular office productivity suite called MS Office will cost about Php11,000. The graphics software called Photoshop is at least Php30,000. Compare that with computer hardware costing as low as Php 12,000 without the operating system and office productivity software. Fortunately, the Linux operating system has evolved very significantly in the last seven years. The OpenOffice.Org office productivity software is now also comparable to the commercial version. The graphics editing software called GIMP has improved very significantly also. Users have a wide array of choices of which Linux distroy they would like to install. Old computers can still be...

Techtalk: Facebook App Suite Turns Brand Pages into Crowdsourcing hubs

Just when you thought Facebook has showed you all they have to offer, think again.  This time, the new app they are offering may actually be of real significance than most of the entertainment apps that they offer now.  Facebook perks up  its kind of “becoming sleepy” users — most of them due to the Timeline innovation by offering the app called “Napkin Labs”.  We don’t know for sure why its called napkin labs, but we’re thinking that’s because most brilliant ideas have all been put in a napkin first in some restaurant when future business partners suddenly have that lightbulb moment. Napkin Labs  makes interactive marketing tools for Facebook. The idea is that it makes a suite of customized apps that make brand pages interactive.  You see, most brands that have Facebook pages have already made the first step in marketing through Facebook, and that is, making their presence known through the Like button.  However, aside from comments here and there, and some promotions, brand pages still have a lot of potential business usage that hasn’t been applied yet. Now, enter the Napkin Labs, what does it really have to offer?  The company offers four different apps. “Brainstorm” is a basic crowdsourcing platform that lets brands ask their community a question. “Photoboard” collects and displays community-sourced images. “Pipeline” turns Facebook pages into open forums. And “Superfans” shows who participates the most in campaigns, then rewards them. Most of the tools come with analytics and moderation features. It is basically an online “lab space” where the brands get to collaborate with their users on products, designs and anything else....
