Talking Robot Kirobo Arrives at International Space Station

Kirobo, the first talking humanoid robot, arrived at the International Space Station on August 9, 2013 after blasting off to space 6 days ago from Tanegashima, in south-western Japan. The robot is equipped with voice and facial-recognition technology and will serve as a companion for Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese to take the role of commander of the ISS later this year. The robot is 34 centimeters long and weighs 1 kilogram and is designed to work in zero gravity. It can process natural language and facial expressions allowing it to make conversations that are more natural. It already “knows” Wakata and is expected to show emotion when he arrives at the ISS. The aging population in Japan means more and more of its citizens are living solitary lives. Robots that can interact and show emotion like Kirobo may be of use in the future to assist people who are isolated for long periods. Kirobo Designed by Tomotaka Takahashi of the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), Robo Garage of Kyoto University, and ad firm Dentsu. Motorola Takes Customization To the Next Level with Moto X

Motorola is trying to come back as a major player in the mobile phone industry with its latest flagship product called Moto X. The company invented the cell phone but failed to keep the lead. It was acquired by Google in 2012 for $12.5B and has since introduced a few mobile handsets before the Moto X was introduced. Customization is the main message for Moto X. In the US, customers can select colors for the front cover, the back cover, the accents and the charger. You can also specify a short message to be printed on the back cover. Storage size can be 16GB or 32GB. This is in sharp contrast to iPhone and Galaxy S product lines which are available only in a few colors (black and white in most areas). To order a personalized unit, the customer uses Moto Maker to specify the exact options from a few thousand combinations. After the order is completed, the unit is assembled at a Texas facility and will be shipped within 4 days. Moto X will be first available under AT&T in the US. Moto X also include the ability to control the phone via voice commands without the need to touch the device. Also the camera can be activated by a flick of the wrist. The hardware include a 4.7” AMOLED display, 2200mAh battery good for 24 hours mixed use, 10 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera, Android 4.2.2 operating system, 2 GB of RAM and option for 16GB or 32GB storage. It has 2 years subscription for 50GB storage on Google Drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and LTE....
